Lamp shades no longer serve as a simply functional part of table lamps; they are now an important component of home decor. Choosing the appropriate style and size of a lamp shade can transform any seemingly simple table lamp into the focal point of a room. Table lamps can be adorned with either silk lamp shades, glass lamp shades, beaded lamp shades, or antique lamp shades.

One of the most popular types of lamp shades found atop many table lamps are silk lamp shades. Typically, silk lamp shades are best suited for formal rooms in a home or more intimate rooms such as a bedroom. In fact, colored silk lamp shades are noted to provide a more dramatic lighting effect to a room as well as add a sense of style. However, the color of silk lamp shades should be suited to the style of the table lamps. For example, table lamps made of antique brass look best with an off-white shade such as a cream colored silk lamp shade. On the other hand, wood and iron table lamps can work with almost any color of silk lamp shade.

A very classic type of glass lamp shades for table lamps is the Tiffany glass lamp shade. Tiffany glass lamp shades can bring a room alive with their intricately designed stained glass panels. The Tiffany glass lamp shades were originally designed in 1890s-1920s by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Presently, these classic Tiffany glass lamp shades can be priced at close to 100 times the price they were originally sold. Tiffany glass lamp shades are best suited for table lamps made of wrought iron or polished oak. These beautiful works of art can add a timeless touch of style to any room in a home.

A new style of lamp shade arising for table lamps are beaded lamp shades. Beads can be used to accent an older lamp shade by adding color and glitter. A variety of beaded lamp shades can be purchased for table lamps, or homeowners can make their own. To transform an otherwise boring lamp shade into a beaded lamp shade only requires a few simple tools: floral wire, lots of beautiful glass beads, needle nose pliers, and a pair of wire clippers. Colored beads can be mixed and matched into any design or pattern, and then threaded into the lamp shade. Homemade beaded lamp shades allow individuals to use their own personal design to dress up their favorite table lamps.

Antique lamp shades atop table lamps make any room seem even more elegant. Adding an antique lamp shade to a table lamp in a dinning room or living room makes for a great conversation piece. Usually, antique lamp shades carry character and a great history, which can transform a table lamp into a treasure.

There are several things to note when shopping for the perfect lamp shade for that favorite table lamp. First of all, be sure to pick the right shape of lamp shade for a particular table lamp. If the table lamp is curvy, opt for a lamp shade with a curved shape. On the same note, if a table lamp is square in shape, a square shaped lamp shade should accompany it. The proportion of a lamp shade to its table lamp is also crucial. Preferably, a lamp shade should be about 2 to 3 inches shorter than the base of the table lamp.

Today, not all table lamps are expected to be topped with a plain, white lamp shade. There are many types, sizes, and colors of lamp shades for people to choose  for their table lamps. No matter what type of lamp shades are chosen for table lamps, a homeowner should choose one based on their own specific preference and style.
