When redecorating a new space, people often overlook the importance of lighting for a room. Most people are aware that certain colors can evoke certain emotions, but lighting can do so as well. Of course there are the typical lighting options that are hanging from the ceiling or standing on the floor, but there are also those fixtures that are equally as viable in improving décor: wall sconces.

Sconces are ornamental light fixtures that are mounted to the wall and most often cast light upward. Historically, sconce lighting was primarily functional to brightening dark corridors, while allowing a person to carry the light when necessary via a mounted torch or candle. Today, wall sconces are still mainly known to illuminate passageways between rooms, but can adorn any sturdy wall or area where floor or ceiling space may be limited. They can be spotted both in private residences and public locations like museums, hotels, churches, bars, offices, libraries, and galleries.

Wall sconces exist in a vast array of sizes, colors (cobalt, amber), styles (art deco, French), shapes (crescent, tubular), materials (stained glass, iron), and that is not even to speak of the number of bulb choices. Electric sconces employ incandescent, fluorescent, or halogen light sources and thus, can emit varying degrees of light. To that end, sconce lighting can serve as practically or as aesthetically as the environment of their location warrants.

Some of the best places to find a rich assortment of wall sconces are hardware and home improvement stores like Home Depot. Here, homeowners can not only select from near-countless interior and exterior sconces, but they can also find all the hardware, tools, and advice that will allow them to install their new finds easily.

Online retailers such as Amazon can also have an extensive variety of indoor and outdoor wall sconces, candle sconces (often referred to as wall mounted candleholders ), and other wall lighting options to brighten any décor. Reading reviews on these sites are also helpful to buyers, as many individuals who have previously bought certain items may post their opinions on the quality of their purchases.

Candle sconces can add a warmth or mystery to a home's surroundings that electrical lighting cannot. Also, candle sconces offer a renewable glow, unlike electric fixtures, and come in candelabra, torch, pillar, and lantern styles of all sorts.

Antique sconces, frequently used to create a Gothic, Colonial, or Victorian ambiance, can be found on auction sites like eBay, or on sites specially dedicated to myriad forms of antique lighting. Unique iron sconces from Southwestern or Mexican artists can be located at websites geared toward iron-wrought light fixtures and other ironwork art. Iron sconces can be an attractive addition to a Spanish or Western-influence décor.

Wall sconces are not limited to indoor ornamentation. There are plenty of functional outdoor wall sconces to choose from as well. Outdoor wall sconces come in many variations similar to indoor wall sconces, but they are generally made more durable to withstand the elements. Sconces to be lit outdoors can be found near front doors, along the walls of a patio, or even above a garage door.

Wall sconces are not only eye-catching complements to nearly every decor, but are also a practical and creative way to bring a little light into anyone's world.
